Natko Hasić will talk about how to brand yourself and your business

When you develop a plugin or a theme, at the end you probably don’t have enough time to work on building a brand around it. Natko Hasić is a designer with years of experience, working on building brand awareness for his own and other themes and plugins. In his talk, he will give insights on what a good brand should look like, and will showcase examples of recognizable brands in the WordPress community. You will learn the very basics so you can build your brand yourself.

First of all, thank you for being with us today. We’re glad you’ll be joining us in Split in September. Could you tell us more about yourself?

I’m currently working as a designer for a digital agency. I’m from Rijeka where the last WordCamp was held and after seeing how well organized it was and how awesome the community is I just felt the need to contribute in some way to WordCamp Split. I’ve been designing since forever, but as most designers, I am rarely satisfied with the final product, there is always room for improvement. That’s part of the appeal I guess, looking at what you did yesterday and thinking „I can do better“. My masters was on typography, I’m really passionate about it and am always trying to learn new things and improve my skills. I enjoy 80’s horror movies and casual weightlifting.

What’s your WordPress connection, how did you started?

I started working with WordPress because I wanted a simple way to turn my designs into fully functional websites and Joomla was too messy for my taste (this was back in 2008). As I learned more about building themes and plugins I started writing WordPress related articles on my site which I really enjoyed. The best part about it was reading comments from all the people finding the articles useful, as well as their suggestions for improving the code. That’s a great way of getting involved in the community – by sharing your knowledge.

The Talk

Your talk “Designing a Brand” is aimed to everyone, regardless of their design experience. What will you talk about?

WordPress community is focused on good code practices which are a great thing but design aspect is often neglected. The main goal of my talk is to show that designing a brand around a product (theme or a plugin) is as important as the code that powers it. Of course that not everyone has the time or budget to invest in design (especially when it’s a one man project) but I will try to provide tips on how to easily establish the basic visual identity of a product.
